London is an amazing city, and in winter it really comes into its own. Of course, to experience it you will have to wrap up warm, but it is well worth it to sample the culinary delights, the festive atmosphere, and the shining lights that the big smoke has to offer during this time of year. Keep reading for my top recommendations.
One of the best things you can do when on a trip to London to really soak up all that Christmas spirit is to head on over to Hyde Park for the Winter Wonderland extravaganza. This is an event that has been running for a few years now and is popular with locals and travels alike.
There is so much to do there too, it’s lucky it’s open until 10 pm. Visit a traditional Bavarian village, drink cocktails at the ice bar, or pop and see Santa to get your request in early.
Then there are all the festive themed circus attractions, as well as plenty of rides, and even an ice rink to truly get you in that Christmas mood.
Remember to book early though, as if you have prebooked ticket you get to skip the queues and go straight in. Something that can help you get the most of our your time when you’re there.
The Brits really like their grub and Christmas time is no exception to this. In fact, it’s the perfect excuse to sample delicious things like mulled wine and mince pies, roasted chestnuts a traditional English street food dating from the Victorian period, as well as the ever-present turkey and stuffing. Something that you will find in baps, rolls, wraps, and toasties from 11.55 pm on November 30th all over the place!
Of course, you can head over to the street markets like Borough to sample delights like these, but if you are after a more refined sit-down meal then check out one of the best restaurants London guides and do a little research before you book. Then you can give some thought about whether you would prefer to go for a traditional British meal like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding at a place like Bob Bob Ricard’s, or something super warming and spicy like a yummy curry at Dishoom.
After a warming meal head on over to one of the many sites in the big smoke where you can view some rather spectacular Christmas lights. The Carnaby Street Christmas Carnival is well worth a look, as are the gorgeous selection available on Bond Street.
There are plenty of Christmas lights to see in London.
Something different is the Magical Lantern Festival at Chiswick House, where you can see all sort of display from Santa’s sleigh to a Chinese temple. There is even a grotto for the kids to visit too. Syon Park’s Enchanted forest is also a great choice, as you get to combine a country style walk with all the magic of Christmas.
Just remember, wherever possible try and time your visit for the switching on ceremonies too. The reason for this being that they are often presided over by celebrities, and include parades, and celebration that will definitely get you in the festive mood.
